In September 2012 the Government announced a review of the Earthquake Commission Act 1993 to ensure that the Act reflects lessons from the Canterbury earthquakes.

Earthquake Commission Amendment Bill

In March 2018 the Government introduced the Earthquake Commission Amendment Bill to update the caps on residential building and contents cover, extend the period for lodging claims and improve claims information sharing. 

Discussion Document

In July 2015 the Treasury released a discussion paper 'New Zealand’s Future Natural Disaster Insurance Scheme'
that sought feedback on a range of proposals for the reform of the Earthquake Commission Act.  The proposals addressed: the purpose of the EQC; the types of cover provided; how homeowners accessed EQC insurance cover; how claims are managed; how premiums are calculated; and how the EQC is financed.
